Inventor Biography

                                                             NIKOLA TESLA

Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American scientist, is a genius and an eccentric. Its discoveries represent modern power and mass communication systems. While his enemy and former boss, Thomas Edison, is the inventor of the iconic American light bulb, phonograph and moving image.

The two warring geniuses waged the 'War of the Current' in the 1880s regarding the electrical system that would power the world (Tesla's alternating current (AC) system or Edison's direct current (DC) rival).

Some of the debate gets heated when comparing Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. So, who is the better inventor?

"They are different inventors, but we can't really say one of them is better, because American society needs some of Edison's inventions and needs some of Tesla's inventions," says the author of 'Tesla: Inventors of the Age of Electricity', W Bernard Carlson.

This is how the two inventors dueled.

Most Brilliant?

Tesla had eidetic memory, meaning he could remember images and objects with precision. This allows him to accurately visualize complex 3D objects. And as a result, he was able to build a working prototype using some initial images.

"He really worked on his inventions in his imagination," said Carlson.

Instead, Edison used sketches for his inventions.

"If we go to the lab and watch him at work, we will find he has a lot of stuff on his desk like, wires and reels and various parts of the invention," said Carlson.

According to Thomas Edison National Historic Park, Edison holds 1,093 patents. Meanwhile, according to a study published in 2006 at Nikola Tesla's Sixth International Symposium, Tesla collected less than 300 patents worldwide.

In terms of total patents, Edison has more totals because he has many assistants who help him organize inventions, and also buy some of his patents.

Most Advanced Thought

"Although the light bulb, phonograph and motion picture are cited as Edison's most important inventions, other people are already working on similar technology," said Thomas Edison National Historical Park archivist in New Jersey, and author of Edison and the Rise of Innovation, Leonard. DeGraaf.

If at that time Edison had not been the discoverer of these objects, many people would have been researching and heading towards the discovery.

In his brief pacing of thought, Edison rejected Tesla's ideas which he considered impractical about an alternating current (AC) electric power transmission system. Instead, he promotes a simpler DC system, which is also less efficient.
